Black Hat SEO’s hijack Haiti Earthquake appeals

19 January 2010 1,692 views No Comment

Unless you have been on another planet for the past week, you will know there has been a devastating earthquake in Haiti. After the devastating quake, many charities have been accepting money online to help the people involved.

Predicatably black hat SEO specialists have been optimising sites for keywords related to the earthquake to try and cause maximum disruption, and make some money. Most of the black hat attacks have been created to try and spread rogue ant-virus software. Black Hat SEOs are attacking keywords such as Haiti, and the capital Port Au Prince.

Once a user lands on the optimised page, which uses advanced cloaking techniques to hide content, they are instantly redirected to a page of false news. Why these people would use such an event to attack the internet is beyond me.

Some black hat SEO’s are even trying to deceive users trying to update money to the cause by setting up a fake donation portal. My advice is that if you are searching on the internet to donate money to the Haiti earthquake disaster, then you should ensure you are using a legitimate and well respected site.
