Google to show site hierarchy in search results

18 November 2009 919 views No Comment

Google have recently announced that they will now be displaying site hierachy in the search results on certain search queries. For the full information from Google please go follow this link.

Google believes that including the breadcrumb trail in the search results will mean users will understand what section of the site they are entering when they click on the link. The below image shows how the new hierarchy looks in the Google Search results:

I am not sure about this change by Google, if their search index is relevant then there should be no need for the user to navigate away from the page displayed in the search results.

But what should you do about this change? Google will have obviously tested this new change, and would not have rolled it out unless the change helps their users. Webmasters should look at their sites and implement breadcrumb trails to their pages if they have not already done so.

Breadcrumbs are also great for SEO as they help improve the internal link architecture, by passing keyword links to relevant pages.
